Japan operates on a different frequency. You can ride a bullet train at 320 km/h, then step into a centuries-old ryokan where time seems to stand still. This is a country where meticulous attention to detail elevates everything from convenience store bento boxes to multi-course kaiseki dinners. Navigating the dense metropolis of Tokyo or the temple-lined streets of Kyoto requires some planning, especially when timing the elusive cherry blossom season or deciding if the Japan Rail Pass is still worth the cost following recent price hikes. From soaking in an alpine onsen to exploring the street food stalls of Osaka, Japan rewards travellers who embrace its distinct etiquette and highly structured way of life.

Culture & Etiquette

Do: Bow when greeting

A slight nod of the head is sufficient for foreigners, showing respect when greeting locals or thanking shop staff.

Don't: Talk loudly on trains

Public transport is kept strictly quiet. Keep your phone on silent and speak in hushed tones if necessary.

Do: Take off your shoes

Remove your footwear before entering homes, ryokans, and many temple buildings. Slippers are usually provided.

Don't: Eat while walking

Consuming food on the go is considered poor manners. Eat street food near the stall where you bought it.

Common Questions

FAQ'S

Is the Japan Rail Pass still worth it?
Following the massive price hike in late 2023, the nationwide JR Pass is no longer a guaranteed money-saver for standard Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka itineraries. You must travel extensively on the shinkansen to break even. We highly recommend using an online JR Pass calculator before purchasing.
Do I need to speak Japanese to get around?
No. Major train stations, airports, and tourist hubs have excellent English signage. However, English proficiency among locals is generally low. Downloading Google Translate with the offline Japanese dictionary is essential for reading menus and asking for basic directions.
Can I use my credit card everywhere?
Japan has historically been a cash-based society, but card acceptance has surged recently. You can use cards at hotels, convenience stores, and most restaurants. However, you will still need yen for rural areas, small shrines, and local street food stalls.
What is the etiquette for using an onsen?
You must bathe completely naked; swimsuits are not allowed. Wash and rinse your body thoroughly at the showers before entering the hot spring water. Keep your small modesty towel out of the bathwater. Note that many public onsens still prohibit visible tattoos.
When is the best time to see the cherry blossoms?
Sakura season typically sweeps from south to north between late March and early May. In Tokyo and Kyoto, full bloom usually occurs in the first week of April, though it varies yearly based on winter temperatures. Book accommodation six months in advance.
