Packing List Generator
Build a tailored packing checklist in seconds. Adjust your trip details below to get exact quantities for clothing, tech, and toiletries, then tick items off as they go into your bag.
How to Use This Packing List Generator
Generating a tailored packing list takes the guesswork out of preparing for your trip. Enter the number of days you will be away, the expected climate, and the type of activities you plan to do. If you are travelling with children or restricting yourself to carry-on luggage, tick the relevant boxes.
Click generate, and the tool will produce a categorised checklist. You can tick items off directly on your screen as you pack them into your suitcase. Your browser saves your progress locally, so if you close the tab and return later, your ticks will still be there. Once you are finished, use the copy button to save it to your notes app or print a physical copy.
How the Numbers Work
The generator scales your clothing quantities based on your trip length, with practical caps built in to stop you from overpacking.
The Carry-On Cap
If you select the carry-on only option, the tool assumes you have a strict space limit. For trips longer than seven days, the generator caps your daily clothing items (like t-shirts and socks) at a one-week supply. It will then automatically add travel laundry detergent to your list. Washing a few items in the sink or dropping a bag at a local laundry service is the only realistic way to travel for three weeks out of a single cabin bag.
The carry-on setting also adds a reminder to your toiletries category: all liquids, aerosols, and gels must be in containers of 100ml or less, and must fit into a single clear, resealable plastic bag.
Climate and Activity Adjustments
A standard packing list is useless if you are heading to a specialised destination.
- Cold Climates: Automatically adds thermals, heavy coats, and winter accessories. It reduces the number of light layers, as you will likely re-wear heavy sweaters.
- Hot Climates: Swaps trousers for shorts and skirts, and ensures swimwear and a lightweight hat are included.
- Activity Types: Selecting ‘Safari’ adds neutral-coloured clothing, binoculars, and insect repellent. Choosing ‘Cruise’ includes evening wear and seasickness bands. ‘Hiking’ ensures you pack moisture-wicking socks and a daypack.
Smart Packing Tips
Once you have your list, how you put it in the bag matters just as much as what you bring.
Use Packing Cubes
Categorise your clothing into packing cubes. Put all your t-shirts in one cube and your underwear in another. If you are travelling with kids, assign a specific coloured cube to each child. This stops you from having to tear apart your entire suitcase to find one pair of socks.
Roll, Do Not Fold
Rolling your clothes rather than folding them saves space and prevents deep creases. This is especially effective for t-shirts, light trousers, and shorts. For bulkier items like heavy sweaters or denim, folding flat is still the most efficient method.
Wear Your Heaviest Items
If you are flying with a heavy coat or hiking boots, wear them on the plane. Airlines do not weigh the clothes on your body. While it might be slightly uncomfortable navigating airport security, it frees up significant weight and space in your luggage.
Keep Essentials in Your Personal Item
Even if you check a bag, always keep your documents, prescription medication, electronics, and a spare change of underwear in your small under-seat bag. If your checked luggage is delayed, you will still have the absolute necessities to get through the first 24 hours of your trip.
