Victoria Falls is a small, walkable town built around one of the world's most spectacular natural wonders. Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya (The Smoke That Thunders), the falls dictate the rhythm of life here. While the sheer scale of the cascading water is the main draw, this Zimbabwean hub is also Africa’s adrenaline capital. You can raft the ferocious rapids of the Zambezi River, take a Flight of Angels helicopter ride over the gorge, or cross into Zambia to swim on the lip of the falls at Devil's Pool. Beyond the river, wildlife roams freely—do not be surprised to see warthogs on the high street. With easy day trips to Botswana’s Chobe National Park, it is the perfect launchpad for a southern African adventure.

Common Questions

FAQ'S

Do I need a visa for both sides of the falls?
Yes, if you want to visit both Zimbabwe and Zambia. The KAZA Univisa ($50) is the best option, allowing multiple entries into both countries for 30 days. You can easily buy it on arrival at Victoria Falls Airport or the land border.
When is Devil's Pool open?
Devil's Pool is located on the Zambian side and is only accessible during the dry season when water levels are low, typically from mid-August to late December. You must book a guided tour via Livingstone Island to swim safely at the edge.
Is the Zimbabwe or Zambia side better?
Zimbabwe boasts about 75% of the falls and offers better viewpoints year-round, as the Zambian side can dry up completely by November. However, crossing into Zambia gets you closer to the rushing water and provides access to Livingstone Island and Devil's Pool.
Can I drink the tap water?
No, it is highly recommended that you drink bottled or filtered water during your stay in Victoria Falls to avoid stomach bugs. Most reputable lodges and hotels provide complimentary filtered water for guests in their rooms or at the bar.
Are the wild animals in town dangerous?
Yes, they can be. Elephants, baboons, and warthogs frequently wander through Victoria Falls town. Keep a respectful distance, never feed the baboons, and always take a taxi at night to avoid walking into dangerous wildlife in the dark on unlit roads.
